Adopted a New Dog? Here’s a Checklist for All the Essentials

Written by: Rob Hunter

Adopting a new dog is the beginning of a life-long friendship.  You want the best for your new best friend, but what does a new adopted dog need? We are here to help you give your new dog the best life possible so you can make the most of each day together.

Keep him fed on time every day

A consistent daily routine will help your dog adjust to his new home. Make sure he gets all his meals on time with a Simply FeedAutomatic Feeder, or for your busy days, a Smart Feed lets you manage his meals from anywhere using your smartphone.

Keep fresh water flowing

Adequate hydration is critical for a long, healthy life. Encourage him to drink more with fresh, filtered, flowing water from a 1/2 Gallon, 1 Gallon or 2 Gallon Fountain.

Keep him active

Just like you, your new dog needs daily exercise for a healthy body and mind. An Easy Walk Harness is a great way to ensure you and your buddy enjoy walks together without him pulling on the leash, and an Automatic Ball Launcher is the perfect indoor/outdoor toy for the dog that never wants to stop playing fetch.

Keep the fun going

Bring play time indoors with irresistible treat-holding chew toys like the Bristle Bone, and interactive electronic toys like the Ricochet provide a fun puzzle to keep your dog engaged for hours of fun!

Keep the noise down

Your new buddy may have a lot to say. Teach him to use his “inside voice” with a Rechargeable Bark Collar. A Lite version as well as a Spray Bark Collar are available for small or sensitive pups.

Keep training together

It’s never too early to start training your new friend. Teach manners, tricks and more with a 100-Yard Remote Trainer (also available in Lite). A Spray Trainer is another gentle way to keep your buddy’s attention on you during training.

Keep potty accidents at bay

Whether your new pup is housetraining, or he just needs a place to go indoors while you’re away, the Pet Loo and Piddle Place are innovative alternatives to puppy pads. These easy-to-use products absorb odor and offer simple cleanup for when he can’t wait for the next potty break.

Keep him safe and comfy in the car

For a trip to the vet, the groomer or the dog park, waterproof Quilted Seat Covers provide protection from muddy paws with handy seat anchors and straps to stay in place. Combine with a Safety Harness to ensure your buddy is securely buckled in for every ride.

Keep the outdoors accessible

Give your new pal the freedom to explore his yard with a pet door. A Sliding Glass Pet Door is a favorite of renters, with no-cut installation, and an Extreme Weather Aluminum Pet Door lets your pup out while keeping the AC or heat in, year-round. With options like the Wall Entry Pet Door you can give your new dog his own special entryway just about anywhere in your home.

Keep on snuggling

After a long day of playing, training and exploring together, Folding Pet Steps or a Bed Ramp offer access to the coziest spots in your home so you and your new best friend can share the furniture – and the love.
