Ensure Your Pets’ Health during COVID-19

COVID and Pets

We are still learning about the virus that may cause COVID-19, but in some cases it appears to be able to spread from humans to animals. Typically, certain pets, including cats and dogs, test positive for the COVID-19 virus when they are tested for it after coming into close contact with people who have the disease. Infected pets can get sick, but most suffer only mild symptoms and are able to make a full recovery. Many infected pets have no symptoms. There is currently no evidence that pets are the source of human COVID-19 infection.

If you have COVID-19 or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, treat your pets like family members to protect them from possible infection.

• Have another family member take care of your pet.
• Keep pets indoors whenever possible and do not let them roam freely.

If you have to take care of your pet

• Avoid close contact with them (hugging, kissing, sleeping in the same bed)
• Wear a mask when around them
• Wash your hands before and after caring for or touching their belongings (food, bowls, toys, etc.)

If your pet has symptoms

Related symptoms in pets include coughing, sneezing, lethargy, difficulty breathing, fever, discharge from the nose or eyes, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

These symptoms are usually caused by a non-COVID-19 infection, but if your pet seems sick:
• Call the vet.
• Stay away from other animals.
Even if you are currently healthy, always check with your veterinarian before bringing an animal to the clinic.

Please keep in mind

COVID-19 vaccines reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect yourself and other family members, including your pets.
Please get vaccinated when it is your turn. Animals can also transmit other diseases to humans, so remember to wash your hands regularly when dealing with animals and avoid contact with wild animals.
